Sly Family Roots

Sly Family Roots

I have recently begun to research the Sly Family.  I have made a little progress but have hit a dead end now.  I am posting the information in hopes that someone has run across the names listed below.

I have located this family in the 1850 census – New York, Cayuga County, Mentz Township.  I have also found them in the 1860 census – Iowa, Hardin County, Jackson Township.  After that Luman seems to disappear. I have been able to locate Adaline Beaumont Sly back in Cayuga County, New York in both the 1870 and 1880 census. She does not appear in the 1892 Census for Cayuga County. In 1870, Adaline is listed as a widow so I am starting to believe that Luman Sly died in Iowa or Ohio.

Luman L. Sly – born abt. 1815, New York – died bef 1870, Iowa or Ohio. Married Adaline Elizabeth Beaumont, born abt. 1817, New York - died before 1892, Cayuga County, New York.   Luman and Adaline had the following children:

1)                John Henry Sly – born abt. 1845, New York. Died of Pneumonia on 2-23-1864 at Camp Cleveland, OH, as a Private in Company E, 129th Infantry Regiment, Ohio.

2)                Caroline “Carrie” Sly – born February 23, 1849, Port Byron, New York.  Died January 31, 1939, Los Angeles, California.  She married W. L. Fuller

3)                Sarah Sly – born abt. 1852, Ohio

4)                E. A. Sly – (daughter) born abt. 1856, Iowa  (I don’t know what the intials stand for – possibly Elizabeth)

5)                Marcia J. Sly – born December 9, 1859, DesMoines, Iowa.  Died March 1, 1938, Los Angeles, California.  Married 1) Elbert Osborn Suydam  2)  Joseph Schultz

In the New York Census for 1880 – Rensselear County, Troy Township – the following information is found:

Elbert Osborn Suydam (head)

Marcia Suydam (wife)

Sarah Elizabeth Suydam (daughter)

Sarah Sly (sister-in-law)

Mary Valentine (wife’s grandmother)

(relationship is to head of household)

Follow the link for Elbert Suydam to see my family's continuing story.

Any information on ANY of the above listed persons would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for taking time to check out my Sly connection.  Make sure you sign the Sly guestbook before leaving.
